St Anne's Catholic Primary School

"Love one another as I have loved you in our home, school and Parish family"

Curriculum Intent:

At St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School we want all pupils to develop an enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of, Science.

We strive to develop their knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills and encourage them to relate these to their everyday experiences in the context of real life and practical ‘hands on’ activities.

We teach children the skills of scientific investigation  so that they know how to find out things and how to communicate their ideas effectively.

We endeavour to make the children confident learners and aim to build science capital for all.

All Science learning follows the collective approach of;

  • securing knowledge,

  • developing skills,

  • promoting scientific enquiry:

Implementation:

Our curriculum objectives follow ‘The 2014 National Curriculum’ and the EYFS Statutory Framework.

All lessons contain a focused element of Scientific Enquiry. This Enquiry is underpinned by the development of Scientific Skills

Children develop their confidence and understanding of the Scientific Enquiry elements above through the progressive development of skills;

Substantive knowledge develops across the three key areas of Science study, mirrored as children progress in to their Key Stage 3 and 4 Education. Children study a wealth of topic encompassing Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Impact:

The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress over time across key stages relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills. Children will therefore be expected to leave St Anne’s reaching at least age-related expectations for Science. Our Science curriculum encourages pupils to be enthusiastic learners, evidenced in a range of ways, including pupil voice and their work.

Science Ambassadors:

 Each Year, Pupil's are given the opportunity to apply to the Science Lead to become a Science Ambassador. This role is important in promoting a positivity around Science throughout the school. Pupil's will be selected based on their letter of application. Throughout the year, these selected children will work with the Science Lead to help coordinate events and promote a buzz for Science across the school.

Safety:

As with all our subject designs at St Anne's, Pupil safety is paramount. Science practical lessons are carried out with expert guidance that follow the CLEAPSS guidance for schools.
